Vibration White Finger is an injury from using vibrating tools over extended periods. Also known as Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome, it can cause permanent damage.. The white fingers name comes from low blood flow due to the collapse of vessels. Nerves and muscles are also injured with excessive vibration. Vibration white finger (VWF), also known as hand/arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), has been recognised as an industrial disease in the UK by the Courts since VWF occurs when the blood vessels in the fingers become damaged restricting the blood flow to the finger ends.

However once the symptoms progress, they can have a real impact on quality of life including frequent pain, difficulty with daily tasks, anxiety and even depression.

Vibration White Finger (VWF) is a bout of pain in the fingers triggered by cold weather and cold objects. It is characterised by white fingers; hence the name “Vibration White Finger.” The fingers turn pale and cold due to the blood vessels narrowing. When the vessels dilate, the fingers turn red and this contrast causes pain. To study the course of vibration white finger (VWF) 55 men were re-examined three and a half to six years after the first examination. The patients were interviewed and finger systolic pressure after general body and local finger cooling was measured. The test results at the two examinations were compared.
